When Fall Doesn’t Feel Cozy

The fall is quickly approaching, and while everyone else is busy gathering their best sweaters and lighting pumpkin candles, some of us feel a quiet dread. The sun is slipping away earlier every day, the mornings are darker, and the heaviness of seasonal depression starts to creep in.

If you’ve ever noticed your mood dip when the days get shorter, you’re not imagining it. There’s a name for this: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

It happens when less sunlight disrupts your body’s natural rhythms: things like your sleep cycle, energy, and even serotonin levels. Basically, the darker it gets, the harder it is for your body and mind to stay balanced.

But here’s the good news: there are simple, practical things you can do to keep seasonal depression from stealing your fall. I’ve used these tips in my own life, and I’m sharing them with you today.

1. Find the Light at All Costs

Sunlight first thing in the morning is everything. Even 10 minutes outside can shift your mood and regulate your body’s clock. Aim for 30 minutes of natural light each day even if it’s catching the last rays after work.

When the sun’s down, don’t sit in the dark. Turn on lamps and overheads to mimic brightness (then dim them later to cue your body for sleep).

And if mornings are brutal try a sunrise alarm clock that mimics daylight. It’s a gentle way to wake up when the world outside is still dark.

2. Warm Your Body from the Inside Out

One of the biggest shifts for me came when I stumbled into Ayurveda. I have to be honest, when I first started learning about it my guard was up big time as a Christian. But, Ayurveda is essentially an ancient wellness system from India that looks at how our bodies interact with the natural world.

Here’s the gist: Ayurveda teaches that each of us has a dominant “dosha,” or body type/energy type. The three are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. I discovered I’m a Vata type; which means my body already leans toward being restless, airy, and cold.

Now here’s where it clicked: fall itself is considered a “Vata season.” So when my own Vata energy stacked on top of a Vata-heavy season, it threw me completely out of balance. Three months of anxiety, overthinking, trouble sleeping, and feeling all over the place.

The really simple fix was doing things that counteract that energy by adding warmth, grounding, and stability.

For me that looked like:

  • Bundling up in cozy clothes and keeping my house warm
  • Soaking in whatever sunlight I could find
  • Eating warm, spiced foods (think soups, chili, roasted veggies, pumpkin everything)
  • Drinking warming teas like my personal favorite, Bengal Spice, or chai every day

Even if you don’t buy into Ayurveda as a whole system, this just makes sense: when the weather gets colder and drier, your body craves the opposite. Warmth, heaviness, grounding. That’s why “fall flavors” like cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin spice aren’t just marketing. They’ve always been part of ancestral diets this time of year.

The bottom line: When I started eating, dressing, and even structuring my days in a way that balanced the season, my mood improved drastically. What used to feel like a battle against seasonal depression became a rhythm I could actually move with.

3. Let the Season Teach You to Slow Down

Here’s the part most of us resist: fall and winter aren’t built for speed. God designed creation with cycles; seasons of growth, and seasons of rest. The trees go dormant, the ground slows down, even the animals retreat.

But us humans continue to try to push through like nothing’s changed. And that’s often why burnout hits harder.

Instead of fighting the season, lean into it:

  • Journal + reflect on where you’ve been this year and where you want to go
  • Use Q4 intentionally. Not to hustle harder, but to reset your direction before the new year.
  • Schedule consistent connection plans like weekly midweek dinners with a couple close friends, or joining a virtual group so you don’t self-isolate. Consistent plans during this time a year is much better than one-offs. It gives you something consistent to look forward to when there’s not much else going on.

✨ One of my favorite ways to slow down and connect is through the Rooted Mama’s Virtual Women’s Circle. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month, and it’s a safe space to breathe, reflect, and be seen alongside other women who get it. If you’re signed up for the newsletter or follow me on Instagram, then you already know when to join the circle!

Why This Matters

Seasonal depression is real, but it doesn’t have to define your fall. With a little light, warmth, and intentional slowing down, you can feel more balanced, connected, and grounded even when the days are short. Rest isn’t wasted time. It’s preparation for what comes next.

Your Next Step: 7 Days Back to You

If you’re already feeling the weight of shorter days and seasonal shifts, you don’t need a huge life overhaul. You just need small, steady steps that bring you back to yourself. That’s exactly what the 7 Days Back to You Challenge was created for.

Every day for one week, you’ll get one gentle action designed to reconnect you with your joy, peace, and sense of self. Here’s a peek at what it looks like:

  • Day 1: Morning Check-In A quick exercise to notice how you actually feel when you wake up (instead of rushing straight into your to-do list).
  • Day 2: Micro-Movement  A short, no-pressure way to move your body that shifts your energy in minutes.
  • Day 3: Joy Audit Pinpoint what still makes you light up and schedule a little more of it into your week.

By the end of the week, you’ll have proof that small, consistent actions really do move the needle and you’ll feel more grounded and confident heading into the rest of the season.
